FUTURE EXPANSION
Vardhman Special Steels Limited is undertaking strategic capacity expansion and downstream integration to strengthen its position as a leading producer of high-quality special and alloy steels in India. These investments will enable VSSL to expand its product portfolio, cater to growing automotive demand, diversify into non-automotive segments, and offer greater value to customers through integrated steelmaking, heat treatment, and forging capabilities. All the upcoming greenfield projects will be located in Ludhiana, Punjab, within 15 km of the existing plant.

GREENFIELD FORGING UNIT PROJECT
VSSL is establishing a state-of-the-art forging facility with technical support from Aichi Steel Corporation, Japan. The facility will use advanced Japanese rolling-based forging technology instead of conventional press-forging technology. It is designed to deliver high material yield, dimensional accuracy, consistent quality, and competitive manufacturing costs.
Capacity : Approximately 3 million forged components per annum in Phase I, with provision for future expansion
Product Type : Ring gears
Size Range : Outer diameter: 170-250 mm,
Inner diameter: 110-160 mm
Thickness: 20-55 mm
Market Segments: Passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, electric vehicles, transmission systems, and global automotive OEM supply chains

GREENFIELD STEEL PLANT PROJECT
The proposed greenfield steel plant project represents a major step in VSSL's long-term growth journey. It will significantly enhance the company's special steel manufacturing capacity and support expansion into both automotive and diversified non-automotive sectors. The new plant will generate carbon emissions of up to 0.2 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of steel produced.

Size Range : As-cast blooms: 240 x 260 mm, 280 x 320 mm, and 340 x 400 mm
As-rolled bars : Round bars, 40-200 mm diameter; RCS bars, 75-200 mm
Market Segments : Automotive, forging, engineering, railways, defence, energy, bearings, construction equipment, and other non-automotive applications
Target Commissioning : March 2030


QUENCHING & TEMPERING FACILITY
VSSL is developing a dedicated quenching and tempering facility to manufacture heat-treated bars with enhanced strength, toughness, and fatigue resistance. The facility will enable the company to offer value-added products for critical and demanding applications.
Capacity : Approximately 12,000 MTPA
Product Type : Quenched and tempered hot-rolled, peeled, and cold-drawn bars
Size Range :
Round bars : 20-100 mm diameter
Market Segments : Automotive components, fasteners, earthmoving equipment, mining, oil and gas, defence, hydraulic applications, and general engineering
Target Commissioning : October 2027
INGOT CASTING FACILITY
The proposed Ingot Casting Facility will strengthen VSSL's capability to manufacture larger steel sections and cater to specialized applications requiring large forging stock. It will support the company's entry into high-value, non-automotive, and import-substitution product segments.
Capacity : 10,000 MTPA in Phase I, with provision for future expansion
Product Type : As-cast and annealed carbon, alloy, tool and die, and special steel ingots for open-die forging and large-section applications
Size Range : Square, polygonal, and round ingots weighing 4-20 MT
Market Segments : Railways, power, bearings, oil and gas, Defence, Aerospace and tool & die industries
Target Commissioning : December 2026

BUILDING A SUPERMARKET OF SPECIAL STEELS
Through these strategic expansion projects, VSSL aims to build a comprehensive “Supermarket of Special Steels” by offering a wide range of steel products and value-added solutions under one roof. With integrated capabilities in steelmaking, ingot and bloom casting, rolling, heat treatment, and forging, VSSL will be positioned to serve diverse requirements across automotive and non-automotive industries. In the future, we are considering to move into the manufacturing of advanced special steel for Aerospace, Defence & Nuclear Power. These investments will broaden the product portfolio, enhance customer service, support import substitution, and strengthen VSSL’s competitiveness in domestic and global markets.
