MIYAWAKI FOREST DEVELOPMENT

DEFINITION

Miyawaki Forests is a modern plantation method used for afforestation that was developed by the Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. These forests are dense, multi-layered, and consist of a variety of native plant species that grow very quickly and help to create a natural ecosystem.  It is aimed at creating a 100 year equivalent indigenous forest within 10 years.

ADVANTAGES OF MIYAWAKI FOREST

  • Conservation of indigenous species.

  • The land requirement is low, thus this technique effectively utilises even small areas of high-value land in urban and rural locations (minimum area 100 sq. mtr.)

  • Preserves the area's biodiversity, which should include a mix of at least 50–100 distinct species. This increases the diversity of species in urban areas.

  • Due to the adaptability of the technique, every component required to create a forest is readily available nearby.

  • The forest also becomes self-sufficient in 3 to 5 years.

  • It helps to improve air quality and reduce the temperature in an area.

  • These forests retain ground water, thus recharging the ground water table.

  • The trees in Native Dense Forest grow 10 times quicker and 30 times denser than those in conventional plantations, and the forest is ten times more biodiverse.

  • In crowded urban areas in the region, it can act as a sound and dust barrier.

VSSL ‘s Miyawaki Forest Development

Vardhman Special Steels Limited (VSSL) has developed a Miyawaki Forest in a 5-acre land area, where they planted 52,300 saplings consisting of 60 varieties of species, with the guidance of EcoSattva Environmental Solutions. The establishment of this forest, with its diverse range of plant life, will not only enhance the local ecosystem but also contribute to improving the overall quality of life for people residing in the vicinity. The creation of the Miyawaki Forest will also aid in sequestering carbon dioxide, mitigating the impact of climate change. Overall, VSSL’s planning to develop more number of Miyawaki Forests which will have a positive impact on the surrounding community and the environment.
